Set meaningful goals
People do better work when they understand the purpose behind it. A list of tasks describes what is happening, but a meaningful goal explains what should change and why it matters. Seeing how their work contributes to the bigger picture gives people a clearer sense of purpose.
Connect company priorities to team responsibilities and everyday work. Agree on the business outcome, who owns it, and where people depend on each other. Leave room for people to choose how they get there and what tools to use.
Choose a goal-setting approach, such as OKRs or SMART goals, that works for your team. Keep the process practical. What matters most is that everyone understands the outcomes they are working toward.
Put it into practice
- Start with the outcome and explain why it matters.
- Name an owner or DRI, directly responsible individual.
- Identify contributors and make dependencies visible.
- Agree on useful evidence of progress.
- Share what you learn along the way.
- Revisit goals in regular conversations.
