Make coaching a shared practice

Managers shape the conditions for their teams to perform. They clarify priorities, give useful feedback, and remove barriers. Employees help shape goals, raise obstacles, and own development actions. Peers and mentors bring additional perspectives and expertise.

Coaching belongs in everyday work, including timely feedback, team discussions, and retrospectives in existing meetings. It does not require a separate meeting for every interaction. Handle sensitive individual feedback privately.

Managers cannot observe every contribution, especially as teams grow. Help employees seek timely feedback from managers, peers, and mentors after meaningful work. Managers remain responsible for providing clear feedback and support.

Put it into practice

  • Let employees shape 1:1 agendas and own development actions.
  • Help employees build the habit of seeking timely feedback.
  • Bring peers and mentors into feedback and learning.
  • Protect manager capacity for coaching and difficult conversations.
